Gerald
H. Kursar, D.O. earned his medical degree from Kirksville College of Osteopathic
Medicine in 1965. After interning at Green Cross Hospital in Ohio, he
completed a three year ophthalmology residency at Doctors' Hospital in
Columbus, Ohio which provided formal didactic education at Ohio State
University, Department of Ophthalmology and Columbus Children's Hospital.
Graduating in the spring of 1969, he and his family soon settled in the
Saint Louis area where he established the first of his two offices.
Board certified by both the American Osteopathic Board of Ophthalmology
and the American Board of Ophthalmology, Dr. Kursar is known as one of
the first ophthalmologists in Missouri to perform cataract surgery with
an intraocular implant lens.
He is nationally recognized as a leader in his profession, having most
recently served as President of the American Osteopathic College of Ophthalmology
and President of the American Osteopathic Board of Ophthalmology. He maintains
close ties with the education of up-and-coming physicians by serving as
an Associate Professor of Ophthalmology for regional schools of Osteopathic
Medicine, and by serving as Resident Instructor for Deaconess Medical
Center Residency Training Program in the field of Ophthalmology.
Dr. Kursar is a Fellow in the American Academy of Ophthalmology, as well
as the American Osteopathic College of Ophthalmology. He serves as a board
member of the St. Louis Society for the Blind and Visually Handicapped
as well as the Missouri Lions Eye Bank. Dr. Kursar is a member of the
Missouri Ophthalmological Society, the St. Louis Ophthalmological Society
as well as numerous other professional organizations. His own education
has continued throughout his career as he has completed numerous courses
on advancing medical and surgical treatments. Most recently, he has completed
extensive hands-on training over the past two and a half years on LASIK
refractive surgery. His hospital appointments include; Deaconess Medical
Center, St. Luke's Hospital, DePaul Medical Center, St. John's Hospital,
Missouri Baptist Medical Center, and Christian Hospitals. In his spare
time, Dr. Kursar enjoys spending time with his family, snow skiing, gardening,
and the occasional leisurely round of golf.
